Media Soldiers II - The Evolutive Watch
As the title indicates, this exhibition is one facet of an ongoing project based on the impact of the contemporary media in our society. The first stage of this project was presented in an exhibition of paintings at Casula Power House in 2002 which was in many ways premonitory of the attitude taken by parts of the media in the Iraq War .
Media Soldier II is presented as a three dimensional collage, sculpture, installation between realism and surrealism. Media Soldier II is social commentary, a satirical look at human evolution, as well as a narrative vision. Federico's work examines how the media is influencing our communities and shaping our collective thinking and memories. This installation is using visual metaphors and parodies moving between the real and unreal but pertinent to the continuing cultural influences that inform and expand our visual input to the future analysis of the media's influence on our community.
Before arriving in Australia, Federico Mendoza had been meditating on a series of social changes in relation to community spirit in Europe which seemed to becoming a worrying issue for the future of democracy. He thought that civic participation and critic were entering a profound crisis. For instance, the media seemed to be utilising an excessive frivolity (a sort of worship of hyper-violence as distraction), an extreme egocentrism, on to which was also grafted a fragmentation in the different social groups where each individual only pursued their own interests.
On the other hand with the end of the cold war the hope of pacific and improved relations between nations and the democratic spirit seemed to be on the agenda. The events which followed such as those in the Balkans and French nuclear tests among others stirred up my conscienceness. Nevertheless there was a possibility of future, a better society with hopes and constructive values for peace. The evolutive path of humanity seems to be tied up to ancestral hates, mixed with a constant latent fight for exclusive power and privileges. The only visible steps forward seem to be the technological ones, the social advances appear to be measured in terms of the ability to hyper-consume.
This exhibition aims at sharing with the public, the necessity for consciousness, as well for a deep instinct of independance, that may help us to escape from manipulation and to look for a balance between the personal and social as well as the individual and the group.
